What is your experience please- Does the e-swift propeller tend to pick up gravel and small rocks that can damage the blades during take-off? Should one limit take-off to paved and grass strips?

Hello Michael,
Yes it could occur that small rocks hit the propeller. The problem comes mainly from the rear wheel which can throw the little stones in the flow of the propeller. I experienced this incident even on grass airfield with some little stones in some areas. There are 2 solutions : 1°) add a protection behind the rear wheel 2°) install a smaller propeller 1,3m diameter instead of the 1,4m diameter to reduce the probability of hitting a stone ( Pascal Lanser tested this with quite good result)....
Nevertheless these 2 solutions are not 100% efficient. The repair solution need to be prepared, with a Carbon repair expert, or learn by yourself to repair the propeller...
Hope it will help you ...
Looking forward to see you again or fly with you one of these days...
Michel Paté.

Hi Michel,
Thank you for the information. I would like to hear more about Pascal's experience with the smaller propeller. Otherwise it would be nice to have a rear wheel fender that could be retracted after take-off to reduce drag.
I would love to come to Belfort again this year, but hopefully I will be spending time with my new glider!! I hope you have great flying weather- and someday maybe we can fly together!
Thanks Again,
Mike

Hi Michel and Mike, I need your help, my propeller has been damaged last week by small rocks ...
"1°) add a protection behind the rear wheel!"
... have you ever seen such a protection? If yes, what does it look like, what material, how to fix it?
Thanks, Georg

If yes, what does it look like, what material, how to fix it? Thanks, Georg Hi Georg, The only guard I have seen is on the PAS models, I think that is installed by Aeriane at the factory (may be available from them). It has screws that attach a cupped piece of plastic (mylar?) behind the rear wheel. In my opinion, it looks like it might add significant drag though. That is why I mentioned a retractable guard in the previous post. I have not made any attempts to create one yet. Luckily, so far I have not had any issues with propeller damage even though sometimes there is small debris on the surfaces where I have flown. Although my E-swift does not have the guard, the fairing does cover more of the wheel in the rear compared to the PAS which may help with this issue. Good Luck, Mike

Hello Georg, I confirm what Mike says. I fly on a Swift Light PAS and Aériane placed a guard behind the rear wheel. But effectively, for me, that protection is good for the stones but increases the drag. I removed it and replaced it with a plastic system coming from a cycle's wheel. Then, I developped a protection in carbon fiber around the rear wheel and it functionned very well but was too heavy (400 gr). I began with fiber components. During last winter period, I developped a new protection in carbon fiber to protect the rear wheel like on the electric Swift. The wheel stops to turn and many stones are directly ejected in the protection. It weights now 150 gr. The glide ratio is also better. Yvain developped another system on his Swift. Also a protection to the ground around the wheel and a kind of a horizontal plate (in fiber) placed left and right of the protection of the rear wheel that goes a little bit to the rear side and stops just before the propeller. I hope it can help you Regards Christian
